Virginia Irene Spitzer Tindell, (88) born October 7, 1929 passed away peacefully on January 10, surrounded by her loving family after an extended illness. She leaves behind a legacy of love that is greater than gold. She was married to her husband, Robert Martel (Bob) of 46 years before he preceded her in death in April 1994. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Lillian Spitzer, sister Esther Black (Joe, deceased), brother David Spitzer and great-grandson Cris Painter. Virginia is survived by her four children, Martha Murray (Donald) of Ooltewah, Tennessee; Melissa Brandon of Knoxville, Tennessee; Robert Martel Tindell II (Diana) of Murray, Kentucky, and Jennie Collingsworth of Knoxville, Tennessee. She is survived by nine grandchildren, Marketta (Mike) LaFoe, Jay Brandon (Courtney); Krista Brandon, and Matthew Brandon; Whitney Fitzgerald, all of Knoxville; Sarah (Tim) Melton of Rock Hill, South Carolina; Trey Tindell (Destiny Byrd) of Brady, Texas; Jake Tindell (Lena Bohannon) and Katie Tindell of Murray Kentucky. Virginia, or Jenny as her friends called her, is also survived by her brother Paul (Mary) Spitzer, Denver, Colorado; niece Tanya (Dennis) Green, great-niece Mandy Green of Arlington, Virginia; sister-in-law Shirley Tindell Black (Joe Jr.) and numerous other nieces and nephews. Virginia or Jenny was an extraordinary compassionate person who was selfless in her dedication to her family and friends. Generosity and thoughtfulness were the hallmarks of her life. If she had it and you needed it, it was yours. She had a delightful sense of humor; her eyes twinkled when she was pulling a “funny” on someone. Virginia was single-handedly saving the planet with recycling efforts that started decades before it was “the” thing to do. She enjoyed traveling, particularly going to the beach and putting her toes in the sand. Virginia worked as an accountant and was retired from TVA, Lawler Wood Realty and Heartland Capital—she loved numbers and loved working! She was still working one day a week up to age 87, when she was “forced” into her third retirement when her boss retired. She liked the activity of getting up and out to work and making her “miscellany” money—translate that to Go to Beach money! Her family and friends will remember pancake breakfasts (did YOU get the stick up?), spaghetti Sundays, holiday fudge and Nuts and Bolts…and her famous cheeseball! As a young couple, Bob and Jenny bought a house in Fountain City where she lived for 68 years. Heartfelt thanks go to her daughter Jennie and great-grandson Brandon for being her devoted companions and caregivers, allowing her to remain in her home. Virginia was a good neighbor to all! A special thank you to Docky Phillips and his wife Linda (deceased), Renda and Terohn Heinrich for their care and attention for decades. Virginia was a member for many years in the Friendly Endeavor Sunday School class at Fountain City United Methodist Church. She particularly enjoyed the teachings of Rob White, her Sunday School teacher. The family would like to thank Thomas Ayres, Jr., M.D., Jeffrey Baerman, M.D. and Caroline Bond-Swann, P.A. of Knoxville Heart Group for their tireless and excellent care of our sweet momma. We could not have asked for a more dedicated group of health care professionals. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 12th, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Fountain City United Methodist Church, with funeral service to follow. Family and friends will meet at Mynatt Funeral Home, Fountain City Chapel on Saturday, January 13th, 2018 at 1:45 p.m. to travel in procession to Lynnhurst Cemetery for a 2:30 p.m. interment service.
