On April 9, 2022, Virgil Stooksbury fought the good fight and finished his race at the age of 87 years old with his wife Barbara fittingly by his side, as she has been for the past 62 years.
Virgil was a man of few words, but the life of faith that he lived out spoke volumes. He was a kind, genuine, servant-hearted man that served both his Lord and his country. He was proud to humbly serve in the United States Army and was a longtime member of Salem Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Church Training Union Director. But of all his roles, the ones most important to him were Husband, Daddy, and “Grandaddy,” and he excelled in these roles most of all. He will be deeply missed by all of those who knew and loved him, but there is peace in knowing he’s in his heavenly home and surely hearing the words “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Beatrice Stooksbury; his brother, Keith Edward Stooksbury, and his infant granddaughter, Julie Woodall. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Debbie (John) Woodall, Randy Stooksbury, Eddie Stooksbury, and Janet (John) Gass; his grandchildren, Amanda (Trey) Meek, Jonathan (Summer) Woodall, Haley Gass, and Emily Gass; his great-grandchildren, Emma, Levi, and Carter Meek, and Easton, Sawyer, and Henley Woodall; his brothers, James (Marie) Stooksbury and David (Donna) Stooksbury.
His family would like to say a special “Thank You” to the wonderful staff at Ben Atchley Veterans Home and Amedysis Hospice for their loving care.
The family will receive friends Thursday, April 14, 2022, at Salem Baptist Church, 8201 Hill Rd. Knoxville, TN 37938, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. John Holland and Rev. Toby Everett officiating. There will be a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 15, 2022, at Greenwood Cemetery officiated by Rev. Trey Meek.
