Shirley Ann Vittatoe, age 78, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 5, 1946, in Lenoir City, Tennessee.
Romans 8:28 reads, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Shirley faithfully served alongside her husband, Dr. Jerry Vittatoe, as a pastor’s wife. She loved her role and took great pride in supporting his ministry. She always made sure Jerry was perfectly dressed—his suit pressed, his tie matching just right. She knew that when he stood in the pulpit to preach God’s Word, he represented not only the church but the Lord Himself. She took care of the little details so that he could focus on his calling. That’s just who Shirley was—selfless, loving, and always looking out for others.
Shirley faithfully served alongside Jerry throughout his 54 years of ministry, supporting him as he pastored seven churches. During his 28-year pastorate at Clear Springs Baptist Church, she founded the senior adult ministry, a reflection of her deep love and care for senior adults, widows, and widowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Ada Hickman; her sister, Mary Kate Belcher; and brothers, Kenneth Hickman, Gene Hickman, and Billy Hickman. Parents-in-law, Edgar and Mildred Vittatoe.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Jerry Vittatoe; her daughters, Amy Vittatoe and Julie (Michael) West. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Justin (Sarah) West and Abby West (fiancé Noah Harrison). She had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of her great-granddaughter, Winnie West. Several beloved nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law.
Shirley found her greatest joy in spending time with her husband, daughters, grandchildren, friends, and her beloved dog Katy. Her warmth, laughter, and unwavering love for her family will be deeply missed but forever cherished. Shirley will be missed by many loving family members and dear friends.
Shirley’s life was a beautiful reflection of faith, love, and devotion to her family and church. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
