Shirley Jean Hoback Miller, age 91 of Knoxville, passed away on August 3, 2019. She was the seventh child of Frank and Florence Hoback, born on May 4, 1928, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was raised in the same city of her birth. She was active in various local churches as a child and sang on the radio with her sister and mother. Shirley was an avid reader since an early age. She attended Shortridge High School in Indianapolis. Her husband was Richard E. Miller and they were married on July 4, 1945. He told her they would live on love and travel the world. Her life was full and she touched so many wonderful people who became her friends. She was active in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, NCO Wives Club, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of Cumberland Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank Hoback and Florence Wells-Hoback; husband, Richard E. Miller; siblings, Chester Hoback, Philip Hoback, French Hoback, Gerald Hoback, Glendon Hoback, Hillard Hoback and Patricia Hoback Foster.
She is survived and will be deeply missed by son, James Miller; daughters, Katheleen Miller-Brockelman (William) and Patricia Miller-Cote (Robert); 9 grandchildren: Eric Miller, April Price, William Brockelman, Wayne Frayser, Kathleen “Beth” Brockelman, Carrie Judy, Shirley “Joy” Jenks, Patty Munoz, and Mary Becker; 30 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in her honor to Cumberland Baptist Youth Missions Fund c/o Wallace Memorial Baptist Church 701 Merchant Drive, Knoxville, TN 37912. Family and friends will gather at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery (5901 Lyons View Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919) on Tuesday, August 6th at 11:15am for an 11:30am interment, officiated by Pastor Kent Williams.
