Sandra Jean Wheeler Neibert, a beloved Powell resident, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Monday, November 11, 2024, at the age of 76. Known for her warmth, genuine compassion and enduring spirit, Miss Sandy left a kind-hearted imprint on the lives of all who knew her.
Born in Knoxville, Sandy grew up in Fountain City and graduated from Central High School in 1966. She moved to Powell in the early 1970s, where she built a life full of love and laughter. As her daughters started school at Powell Elementary, Sandy was the consummate Tennessee Volunteer working in the school health clinic, serving as a room parent, supporting the PTA, co-leading Girl Scout Troop #31 and on and on. Substitute teacher positions at Powell Middle led to a full-time role as a teacher’s assistant working in special education. She later moved to Powell High where she also worked in special education until her retirement. This work is truly what Miss Sandy was meant to do, and she developed special connections with dozens of students and their families over the years. Her dedication to Powell students with special needs came to Sandy so naturally.
Sandy is survived by her husband of 51 years, Gary; daughters, Jennifer (Mark) and Laurie (Michael); grandchildren, Harper, Nicholaus, and Zoe; sister, Diane and a host of extended family and life-long friends – including her special girls, Gayle, Nancy, Linda, and Martha. Sandy’s family will forever remember her sense of humor, her generosity and giving spirit and of course her affinity for flip flops and Diet Coke!
We want to thank the dedicated hospice team at Parkwest Medical Center who supported Sandy and us, in the final days of her life.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Mynatt Funeral Home-Powell Chapel, with a service to follow. Family and friends will meet at 10:45am on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Lynnhurst Cemetery for an 11:00am interment.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association to help advance research and provide care and support for the millions, like Sandy, who are affected by Alzheimer’s.
We will miss you Mimi, and your memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew you.
