Roy Richard Moon – The man. The life. The legend.
Richard Moon was a loving husband and father, who passed on September 17, 2023, at the age of 80. Born and raised in Knoxville, he was a graduate of Carter High School class of 1961, and went on to serve as a combat medic in the US Army from 1961-1964.
Richard was a hard worker and possessed an entrepreneurial spirit fed by his desire to take care of his family. Over the years, Richard owned and operated his own baseball card shop, an antique shop, and was part owner of two Dunkin Donuts franchises back in 1970’s and 80s. He accomplished all this while maintaining full-time status as an employee of Norfolk-Southern. He retired in 2003 after 39 years of employment.
Richard was a fighter and fought Parkinson’s disease for 20 years. Never resting idle, even after his diagnosis, he looked for ways to use his hands and keep busy by making the most incredible hanging planters, and intricate miniature baskets. He spent countless hours honing this craft and shared his baskets with everyone.
A dedicated family man, Richard is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Joan, and their children Lisa Campbell (Don) of Greenville SC, and Ricky Moon of Knoxville.
Richard’s zest for life, unwavering work ethic, and love for his family will be cherished by all who knew him.
