Robert Lee Haun

February 15, 1947 — January 6, 2022

Robert Lee Haun, a Marine, Vietnam Veteran, loving husband, brother, and Papa was reassigned to his heavenly home when he won his battle with cancer on January 6, 2022, at his home with his loving wife of 25 years by his side. Robert was born February 15, 1947, in Knoxville, TN. He was the seventh child and third son of Willie Russell Haun, Sr., and Virginia Dare (Henderlight). Growing up in a large family came with its challenges, but he loved each family member dearly and was extremely proud to be the son of Bill and Bunt, "two of the hardest working people in Tennessee". He would emulate that work ethic throughout life, beginning work at the age of twelve and continuing into his seventies, always ensuring that his family had the means to take care of each other and live a better life. Throughout his career, Rob was most proud of his service to the United States Marine Corp. Rising the ranks to Sergeant, Robert flew 300 missions, serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 363, as a gunner and then, Crew Chief of a UH-34D helicopter in Vietnam battle zones, moving the wounded and carrying out resupply missions. The United States Marine Corp recognized Robert for his honorable service with 15 air medals and a host of other decorations, medals, and badges. Robert valued good ole fashioned communication and was known for writing letters when he wanted to effect change or have a situation rectified. He was a stickler for protocol and not much for silliness, but he was loyal, consistent, and loved his family tremendously. He enjoyed Sunday visits with his son and granddaughters, traveling with his wife, daughter and grandsons, and could often be found rocking in the garage while reading military, crime and suspense stories. Some of his favorite trips included a one day Honor Air trip to Washington, DC in 2019 and a trip to the Grand Canyon in 2017 with Mary Jane, Brenda, Adam, and Jacob where he loved riding The Grand Canyon Railroad. Robert is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; sons, Jeffrey Lynn (Jennifer) and Robert Lee (Maria) of Knoxville, and Brian Lavigne of Seymour; daughter, Brenda Freers (Steve) of Knoxville; granddaughters, Talia (Dustin), Kaitlyn, Monica, Leah, Sydney, Kendyl, and Blakely; grandsons, Adam, Jacob, and Tyler; great grandsons, Braden and Kaiden; great granddaughters, Blakelee, Auleigh, Carlie, Millie Kay, and Ellowynn "Ellie" sisters, Mary Sue (Oglesby), Martha (Parsons Buckley), Minthy (Hauther), Sandra (Smith); brother-in-law and good friend, Rudy Hauther, and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by Willie and Virginia (Henderlight) Haun; daughter, Lana Michelle; brothers, Willie, Fred, and Jerry; sisters, Etta Faye (Beeler) and Barbara (Sayne). A receiving of friends will be held Friday, January 14, 2022 at Asbury United Methodist from 5:30pm-7:00pm, with a service immediately following. With military honors, Mr. Haun, will be laid to rest at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at 2pm. "A Marine never dies. He just goes to Heaven and regroups."
