Rev. Herbert L. Jones, age 90, was born on December 26, 1928 and went home to see his Savior on June 15, 2019. He was proceeded in death by his Papa and Mama, Thomas “Mack” Jones and Willie Mae Jones as well as his brother John Thomas “JT” Jones. He is survived by his cherished bride of sixty-eight years Kathleen Jones; Children: Anita Crosson and Don Jones; Grandchildren: Terra (Chris) Goosie, Tomica Geddie, and Justin Crosson; Great-grandchildren: Grace, Gavin, and Blake Goosie; Siblings: Rev. Virgil Jones, Rev. Vencent Jones, Virginia Hall, and Carolyn McNeil.
At sixteen years old, Herbert came to know the Lord as his Savior. After being called to preach while serving in the United States Air Force, he was ordained in 1953 and pastored several churches over the course of forty-two years: Bethel Baptist (Corryton), Atkins Baptist (Corryton), Greenway Baptist (Knoxville), East Cumberland Baptist (Middlesboro, KY), First Baptist Church of Caryville (Caryville, TN), and Deep Springs Baptist (Dandridge, TN). Herbert also helped start mission churches in Bossier City, LA and Cincinnati, OH. During his forty-two years in active ministry, he served in many other capacities: the Executive committees of both the Tennessee and Kentucky Baptist Conventions, Vice-chairman of the Tennessee Baptist's Historical Committee, Moderator of the Bell County, KY Baptist Association, and Vice-moderator of the Campbell County Baptist Association. After retiring from pastoring, he joined Union Baptist Church where he was an active member until his passing. Herb became the Director of Missions for the Midland and Northern Baptist Associations after he left full-time ministry, but he continued to preach well into his eighties.
Herb, affectionately known as Daddy and Paw, left an unmatched legacy of loving and serving the Lord, his family, and his community. He loved studying the Word of God, riding his lawnmower, teasing and pestering his family, and visiting anyone and everyone within driving distance. He loved people, but above all he loved the Lord.
In lieu of flowers we ask that donations in his memory be made to Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home, PO Box 2206 Brentwood, TN 37024 or Union Baptist Church, 8244 Old Maynardville Hwy Knoxville, TN 37938.
