Ralph Craig Sweat, 68- dedicated husband, father, brother, pappy, and friend- passed away peacefully at home after a year-long battle with ALS on April 29, 2024.
Craig was born the oldest of four children to Ralph and Shirley Sweat on August 30, 1955. He graduated from Halls High School in 1973 and he went on to attend the University of Tennessee. He met his wife Becky on October 16, 1982, after Tennessee beat Alabama. They celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary on April 23, 2024.
He is preceded to heaven by his parents Ralph and Shirley Sweat, stepmother Barbra Summers Sweat, and sister Cindy McDevitt. He is survived by his loving wife Becky; children Jeff Auer (Crystal) and Jessica Sweat (Tyler); beloved grandchildren Baylee Hill (Ryan), Joshua Auer, and Logan House; siblings Kim Henley and Chris Sweat; nieces and nephews Kristi, Heather,
Savannah, and Tommy; as well as several other treasured family members and friends; special friends Tia and Greg Conner.
Craig had a thirst for knowledge. He often spent his time reading and researching topics of interest or reading books. He loved puzzles and trivia. He would love to watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy with his wife. Craig also enjoyed watching the Tennessee Volunteers and was truly a Vol for Life. It was rare that you would walk into his home and not see some sort of sporting event on the television screen. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed teeing off with his family and friends. Craig was also a master with his humor and witty timing that could easily bring a smile or laugh to those around him. His antics were legendary and those who knew him have their own stories to tell. Craig was also a man of God and compassion. He spent much of his life reading God’s word, singing in the choir, and praying for his friends.
Craig was a caring, loving, and wonderful father and pappy to his children and grandchildren. He was always there to offer sports advice, laughs, and hugs, go out of his way to get whatever specific toy was in demand, or just be there when anyone needed him. Craig will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to ALS association to help fund research to find a cure for this progressive neurodegenerative disease.
