Opal Pauline Rutherford

May 19, 1927 — January 12, 2021

Opal Pauline Smith-Rutherford (known to many as Mizz Smitty), left this world this morning, January 12, 2021, to take Jesus’ hand, on the road to Glory, passing peacefully. Born in Jefferson County, TN May 19, 1927 Opal was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife to her first love, Francis Smith, who preceded her in death. With Francis she was the mother of 4 children, for most of their life living in the Knox County area. She worked for Camel Manufacturing and Hills Department stores, and… she was the woman behind Smitty’s Market, among other jobs in her life. She enjoyed a too brief autumn marriage to Jack Rutherford, who precedes her in death also. Also proceeding her in death is her mother, Nell Patterson Spangler, brothers Franklin and Wayne Patterson, and sister, Mary Francis (Girly) Watson, son Dwight Smith, and grandsons Nick Smith, and Greg Perkins. Also going before, sister (in law), Alma Harkleroad. Opal is missed and remembered by her daughter Linda (Howard) Sanders, sons Donald (Judy) Smith, and Jerry Smith, and daughter-in-law Carol Smith (Dwight). Grandchildren who will miss their Mamaw are Melissa Huffstetler (David), Crystal Garren (Bobby), Joey Smith (Tanya), Billy Smith (Kerry) and Melinda Collins (Jonathan). Great Grand Children she indulged are Scotty, Megan, Drew, Cali, Zane, Elena, Claire, Liberty and Nathaniel. Four great great grandchildren were also touched by her, Kaydence, Levi, Landon, and Blaykelyn. Nieces and nephews she loved were many, all remembered by her. Opal gave her soul to Jesus long, long ago. She gave her heart and friendship to many throughout her life, 3 who were just sisters of different mothers, Patsy Wittenbarger, Bertie Keammerer(preceding her), and Annie Disney. They loved a good church singing or a girl’s trip to the beach (where none ever got wet). Opal was the definition of a country cook, never looked at a recipe, and just knew what pinch of something was needed. Family and extended family shared many meals and holidays, and while there were often leftovers, there was never any leftover chicken and dumplings, her signature dish. It’s been a long time since Opal made those; we all wish we could have them just one more time. Our hearts are heavy today, we will all miss you, seems like our hearts are breaking in two…but we all rejoice in your arrival in heaven with Jesus. We love you. From the hearts of all Opals family and friends we wish to express our deepest thanks to all the staff at NHC Knoxville and Smoky Mountain Hospice for all they did to make her last years peaceful and comfortable. God bless you all for all you did for her and all you do every day for all your patients. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2020 in Pollard Cemetery, with Rev. Charlie Harkleroad officiating. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 2:45 pm for the 3:00 service. Condolences for the family may be left at www.mynattfh.com.
