Nancy Umberger Stanulis, age 86 passed away August 1, 2022. Nancy was born in Wythe County, Virginia to the late Ernest Byron and Maude Rickey Umberger. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald Stanulis and her sister Susan Umberger Wade. She attended Mary Washington College and completed her training as a medical technologist at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Later in her career she worked as a dialysis nurse. Nancy was devoted to her husband and “her girls.” She volunteered for many years for Smyth County Community Hospital and the Head Start Program. Nancy loved the theater and her garden and was an avid bird-watcher. She was a faithful member since 1966 of St. John's Catholic Church, Marion, Virginia. Nancy is survived by her four daughters Susan Carole Welch of Roanoke, Virginia; Elizabeth Skilling of Richmond, Virginia; Catherine Ballance of Baltimore, Maryland and Sandra Steiger of Knoxville, Tennessee. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Katherine Skilling Larkin, Byron Ballance, Stuart Ballance, David Ballance, George Testerman and Caroline Testerman Wright. One great-grandson, Jack Larkin, and seven nieces and nephews also survive. The family would like to thank her several caregivers over the last several years, but especially Renee O’Conner. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2022 at St. Mary Mother of God Catholic Church, Wytheville, Virginia with burial immediately following at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
