McConkey, Michael Edward, age 68 of Knoxville, passed peacefully on Friday, May 6, 2022. Mike was a faithful member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. He was a graduate of the Powell High School Class of 1972, where he was PHS football MVP, KIL-MVP, and All-State. Mike was a 1976 University of Tennessee at Martin graduate and football standout. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. After teaching and coaching in Knox County Schools, Mike retired from S.C. Johnson. Mike was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on December 8, 1953, to Robert C. and Margaret (Raunig) McConkey. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Cindy Cox. Mike is survived by his wife of 37 years, Gail Wyatt McConkey; son, Justin McConkey of Raleigh, NC; stepson, Jake Mabe; stepdaughter, Jenna Sharp (Rance); granddaughters Maisen and Reagan Sharp; sister Cathy (Jim) Morrison; brother Robert “Bob” McConkey Jr.; brother Doug McConkey (Brenda) of Greenville, S.C.; sister Nancy Nolen (Eddie); brother-in-law, Gary Cox; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends. An avid outdoorsman, Mike’s passions were hiking, backpacking, golfing, fly fishing, University of Tennessee athletics, and he loved Wyoming, Montana, and the Rocky Mountains, and he recently joined a bowling league. Truly, he was amazing! He bravely fought Parkinson’s disease for 20 years. Today, and hereafter, he walks in a new body. The family is sincerely grateful to the doctors and nurses of the Tennova North ICU and his primary care physician, Dr. Armand Wood. Mike’s receiving of friends is 5:00-7:00 pm Tuesday, May 10, at Beaver Dam Baptist Church, service to follow at 7:00pm, officiated by Dr. Alan Price.
