Marvin Lynn Hammond

December 14, 1942 — July 12, 2014

Marvin Lynn Hammond (Hambone), age 71, our beloved husband, dad, and papaw “went home” reporting for duty with his Lord on July 12, 2014. Dad will be remembered as a Godly servant leader, a generous southern gentleman, and one who was always showing genuine Christian love for his fellow man, especially for the less fortunate among us. After being saved at an early age at Alice Bell Baptist Church, our husband, dad, and papaw was a faithful member at Salem Baptist Church. He was the retired President/CEO of Hallsdale Powell Utility District. He also retired from KUB after 30+ years of service. Dad was a proud alumnus of ETSU where he was member of the ETSU baseball and football programs in the 1960’s. He also played minor league baseball for the Macon Peaches in the 1960’s. Dad was a US Air Force veteran and was the holder of the coveted Eagle Scout and Silver Beaver awards. He squeezed every ounce of life he was given whether he was working, fishing, or hunting. He was proud to be known as a conservative, “deep water” Baptist and as an unworthy man saved and blessed by God’s grace and love. He was preceded in death by loving parents, Harvey and Carrie Hammond. Survivors include his loving wife, Kay Hammond; children: Jeff and Missy Hammond, Lisa and Darren Carwell; wonderful brother and best buddy, James (Jim) Hammond; grandchildren: John and Xan Hammond, Amber and Colby Cardwell, and Megan Pratt; great- granddaughter Lucy Rae Pratt; special cousin Red Hammond; inlaws: John and Wanza Hill, Ruth Walker (Kyle Walker), Don and Suzi Campbell, and Faye and John Cummins; several nieces and nephews. Receiving of friends for Marvin will be Tuesday, July 15, 2014, 4:30-8:00pm at Salem Baptist Church with funeral services to follow, Rev. John Holland officiating. Eulogies will be given by Bill Landry, John Hill, and John Valliant. Family and friends will meet 10:45pm Wednesday at Fort Sumter Cemetery for an 11am graveside. Honorary Pallbearers will include Charles Renfro, Dr. Bill Cloud, Don Campbell, John Hill, Dr. Bob Collier, former ETSU teammates, Dave Bristol, Hallsdale Powell Utility District Employees, and Senator Lamar Alexander. Special thanks to Tennova Hospice in Halls and all the wonderful family and friends who came to visit him and got to share in his last few days. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to : Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, 8201 Hill Road Knoxville, TN 37938; Alice Bell Baptist Church 3305 Alice Bell Rd Knoxville, TN 37917; Kyles Ford Baptist Church 7792 Kyles Ford Hwy; or to the Giddeons.
