Leon Franklin Wolfenbarger, age 88, born February 25, 1933, to the late William Lloyd (Bill) and Myrtie May Foster Wolfenbarger in Anderson County, Tennessee.
He was drafted into the Army for the Korean War on April 12, 1953, and basic training was at Camp Breckinridge, KY in the 101st Airborne. The majority of that service was spent in Germany. On June 6, 1955, he married Mary Elizabeth (Bib) Russell. Together they had five children who he supported working as a diesel mechanic at Weigel’s and International until starting his own truck repair business on Raccoon Valley.
Leon was called to the service of God at an early age. He was ordained in 1957, pastored many churches, and was requested to guest preach frequently. His services were lively and passionate reflecting his convictions and faith. He was a member of Island Home Missionary Baptist Church in Norris.
Dementia changed his personality and memory but never diminished his love for the Lord. Leon prayed without ceasing until just days before he was called home on February 4, 2022.
In addition to his parents, and wife, he is preceded in death by brother, Gene; sisters, Alta Sanders, Dorothy Williams Gray; grandson, Steven L. Wolfenbarger.
He is survived by children, Beverly, Steve (Julie), Dale (Judy), Randall and Terry Ann Welch (Johnny Currier); grandchildren, Wendy, Ashlie, Cody Welch, Joseph, Michael, Nicholas Welch, Brooke and Cheyanne Welch; great grandchildren; sister, Bernice Hamock (Roy); many nieces and nephews.
Special people in his life that brought him joy, Roy LaRue, Dennis Galloway, Elbert Hunley, Bill Fry and Stacei Gregory at McDonald’s on Emory Rd., her friendliness always made him smile.
The family would like to extend gratitude to Covenant Hospice. Words cannot express the professionalism and kindness provided by these wonderful people who help us keep Pop comfortable and at his home during his downward spiral. They helped us provide Pop with his last and most important wish to remain home. So, thank you to his primary team, RN Cindy, CNA Donna and Chaplain Tom and everyone who filled in for them. Pop enjoyed the care, singing and prayers.
Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, from 5:00pm until time of funeral service at 7:00pm with Roy LaRue, Dennis Galloway and Roy Hammock officiating. Family and friends meet on Thursday, February 10, 2022, at Wolf Valley Baptist Church Cemetery at 10:45am for a 11:00am graveside service.
