Karen Dean Durham, age 49, of Knoxville, danced in to the arms of her Savior at Physicians Regional Medical Center on Monday, November 24, 2014. She was surrounded by the same loving family and friends who saw her through a 13 month battle with cancer. She won that battle when she stepped into heaven. There to greet her were her daughter, Heather; granddaughter, Amber, her father and mother and sister, Debbie. Left to cherish her memory is her beloved son, Austin, and her adopted family, David and Kathy Burnett, Brooke, Katelyn, and Tyler Smelcer. Also her sisters through A Hand Up For Women, Agape, and her peers at Knox County Recovery Court, where she proudly served as Peer Recovery Advocate. Special thanks to Dr. Cole Hosenfield, Dr. Saji Eapen, and Tiffany Sipe for their wisdom and compassionate care. Thank you to Cumberland Baptist Church and A Hand Up For Women for being what Karen called her family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made toward Karen’s final expenses by sending a check designated as such to A Hand Up For Women, PO Box 3216, Knoxville, TN 37927. Family will receive friends 5-7PM Friday at Cumberland Baptist Church, 5600 Western Ave, with a celebration of Karen’s amazing life to follow at 7PM. Family and friends will meet 12:45PM Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery for 1PM interment service.
