Karen Anne Mongan, November 26, 1947 - October 21, 2019
Karen Anne Mongan, age 71, passed away on the morning of October 21, 2019 in Knoxville, TN at the Williamsburg Villas Alzheimer’s care and assisted living facility. Born the middle of three children on November 26, 1947 in Denver, CO to Owen S. Everden and Kathleen V. Mitchell, she was raised in Owosso, MI and began playing flute in elementary school with her lifelong friend Suzanne Shapiro. After graduating from Owosso High School, she attended Central Michigan University following in her mother’s footsteps to become a teacher. Shortly thereafter, she gave birth to Kory R. Johnson in Owosso. Karen eventually settled in Maryland and met B. Michael Mongan while she pursued a career with a DOE contractor and gave birth to Zachary M. Mongan. She married Michael on December 20, 1989. Karen proudly volunteered for over 22 years as a flautist with the Montgomery Village Community Band, alongside friend and fellow flautist, Jocelyn Weinberg. She also volunteered as coordinator of the Grey Fox Bluegrass Academy for Kids for over 15 years. From her birth to her death she enveloped everyone around her with love, positivity, and music. Karen will be remembered as a teacher, musician, mother and giver of everything she had to offer. She is survived by her beloved husband of 30 years, Mike; a brother, Rick; sons, Kory and Zach; 5 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and step grandchildren. Memorial services will be held in Tennessee and Maryland at a later date.
