Joseph Houston Whaley

Joseph (Joe) H. Whaley, age 77, of Corryton, TN passed away in his home on Thursday February 4, 2021. He was born on December 15, 1943 in Garland, KY. One of six siblings, he grew up in Knoxville, TN. He graduated from Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy in 1961. A proud veteran and one who loved his country dearly, he served in the Air Force from 1962-1966. Joe married the love of his life, Wilma Jean (Jones) Whaley on October 6, 1967. Joe worked in the storage business for many years and then the coffee service industry, owning his own coffee business until he got cancer in 2006. Joe was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Frank and Edith (Abston) Whaley, his sister Sheri Hill, in-laws David and Ella Jones, his best friend, Gordon Cox and his wife Wanda, brothers-in-law Duane Hill, Gary Jones, Ernest Smith, and Robert Jones. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, his two children Brian (Melissa) Whaley of Clarksville, TN and Anne-Marie (Jim Ed) Wright of Forney, TX. Grandchildren Logan (Laura) Wright, Morgan Whaley, Devin Wright, Brennan Whaley. His siblings Paul (Nancy) Whaley, Jimmy (Kaye) Whaley, Kenny (Rei) Whaley, and Phil Whaley, Sisters-in-law Pat Smith and Sue Jones, plus countless nieces and nephews. Joe loved to go fishing, square dancing and to Blue Jays games. He also loved country and gospel music, the Smoky Mountain Jubilee in Pigeon Forge where his kids were the cloggers on the show for several years. Joe was humble and was always there for family, friends, and neighbors. He took pride in helping others and providing for his family. Joe was an active member at Washington Presbyterian Church, Corryton, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Washington Presbyterian Church building fund, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Shriners Hospitals for Children, or Victory Junction. Family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at Mynatt Funeral Home Halls Chapel with a service to follow at 7:00 PM, Rev. Rick McIntee and Rev. Melissa Whaley officiating. Friends and family will meet at 12:15 PM for a 12:30 PM interment at East Tennessee State Veteran’s Cemetery (John Sevier Highway) on Wednesday, February 17, 2021. Due to Covid restrictions and respect for family wishes, face masks are required for every event. Online condolences may be left at www.mynattfh.com.
