John Edgar Rhyne

John Edgar Rhyne, age 87, of Powell, TN, passed away April 3, 2025. He was born on May 14, 1937, to the late Kelly and Velma Rhyne in Charlotte, NC. He moved to Powell as a child, where he grew up on the family farm. John was a graduate of Powell High School and Carson-Newman College. After a debilitating illness at the age of 7, he had a passion for exercise that lasted the rest of his life. John won the Mr. Knoxville contest in 1957 and worked as the physical director of the YMCA in the 70’s. He was a teacher, a business owner, and a private pilot. His most successful endeavors were that of husband, father, and grandfather. John had a great sense of humor, but he was serious about the importance of having a personal relationship with Christ. He was preceded in death by brothers Kelly Dan Rhyne and Joe Rhyne.

John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary, sons Dan (Charlotte) and Gordon, Jill and grandchildren Molly, Jacob, Georgia, Rachel, and Sam. The family would like to thank all of his caregivers that provided help the last few months.

Family will receive friends 5:00-7:00pm Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Temple Baptist Church, Curtis Hutson Chapel with service to follow at 7:00pm. Family and friends will meet at 10:45am Friday, April 11, 2025, at Greenwood Cemetery for an 11:00am interment.
