John McCarter passed away on July13, 2014. He was born on November 1, 1922 in Sevier County, TN where he lived until moving to Knoxville as a teenager. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and was a veteran of World War 2 serving with the 3rdInfantry Division in Italy. He participated in the Naples Foggia and Rome Arno campaigns where he fought in the battles of Monte Cassino and Anzio. After his military service he returned home to Knoxville where he met the love of his life, Gladys Perkey, and they married in 1948. He was employed at Avondale Dairy and later the YMCA. He enjoyed attending church, gardening, was an avid sports fan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys McCarter; parents George and Mary McCarter; brothers Willard, Dewey, L.F., Wiley and Leroy and sisters Velma, Cecil and Jane. He is survived by brothers Paul and Frank (Ab); son Carl and wife Sandra, daughter Sandy and husband Gary Stone, son Tommy and wife Starr; Grandchildren Chris and wife Keri, Stephanie and husband Daniel, Jonathan and wife Emily, Zack, Kaleb and Amanda; Great grandchildren Madison, Annabel, Callie and Rory. The family would to like to thank Summit View Nursing Home, Caris Hospice Care and Christ United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends from 5-6 p.m. with service to follow at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, at Christ United Methodist Church, 7535 Maynardville Highway. Rev. Denny Humphries and Rev. Charla Sherbakoff officiating. Family and friends will meet at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetary, John Sevier, for 1:30 interment.
