John David Todd, aged 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 3, 2022.
John was born April 16, 1929, in Smyrna, Tennessee to J.D. and Mary Todd. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State College with a B.S. degree; the University of Tennessee with B.S. and master's degrees; and the University of Illinois with an Ed.D. John served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He taught 10 years at Christiana and Eagleville High Schools and taught agricultural education at the University of Tennessee for 35 years. He retired as a professor from UT in 1999. During his career, Dr. Todd wrote many articles for agricultural education publications. He was a life member of the FFA Alumni Association and served three years as president, while also maintaining memberships to several other agriculture organizations and honorary fraternities. He received the Outstanding Teacher Award for the UT College of Agriculture and the Jaycee Teacher of the Year Award for Rutherford County. He was a member of Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church for 58 years, serving as an elder of the church and session clerk for over 20 years. He taught the Challengers Sunday school class for over 40 years. Also served as a member of the Committee on the Ministry for the Presbytery of East Tennessee and was a member of the Gideons. John is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles Todd and sister Claudine Phillips. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Sue Mayes Todd; daughters Susan Martin (Doug) of Knoxville and Joan Merryman (Kenny) of Murfreesboro; granddaughters Madelyn Pitcher (Brian), Claire Hines (Michael) of Knoxville, Molly Kate Merryman of Murfreesboro; and grandson Todd Merryman of Arlington, Virginia; along with several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Tennessee FFA Foundation (PO BOX 5034 Tennessee Tech University. Cookeville, TN 38505), or the charity of your choice. Pallbearers: Steve Gass, Doug Martin, Kenny Merryman, Todd Merryman, Brian Pitcher, and Michael Hines. Honorary pallbearers: members of the Challengers Sunday School class. Service will be held 4:30pm at Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Friday, October 7th, 2022, with Receiving of Friends and a reception to follow at 5:30 pm in the church’s fellowship hall.
