Jerry Dean Newman, age 77, of Knoxville Tennessee passed away on Friday, January 24,2020. He was born March 14, 1942, the fourth of five children, to Willie Mae Thomas Newman and George Clarence Newman. Jerry learned to be a carpenter from his father at a young age and truly loved building things. He accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of 12. He was an active member of Roseberry Baptist Church where he sang in the choir. He graduated from Fulton High School and went on to work at Rohm and Haas Company for 40 years. After retirement, he went back to work as a food sampler at Sam’s Club. He enjoyed more than anything fishing with his best buddy, his granddaughter Ashley. He was preceded in death by both parents, brother Jack, two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and parents-in-law Dallas and Christina Riffey. Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Edna Riffey Newman and his son Gordon, his daughter Lisa Newman Thomas (Anthony) and his beloved grand daughter Ashley Meagan Thomas and her boyfriend Jay Goins, sister Betty Irwin and brothers J.C. (Sondra) and Tommy (Sue), and sisters-in-law Glenda Newman, Ruby Hitch, Hazel Bennett, Ruth Moore, Ginny Riffey, Frances Stalsworth and Jessie Riffey; nieces and nephews too numerous to mention, but he loved them all. The family will receive friends from 6:00 -8:00 pm Tuesday January 28, 2020 with a funeral service to follow at 8:00 pm, Rev. Greg Jones and Rev. Rick Rogers officiating.
