Jean Frazier Freshour, 98 years of age, died on May 18, 2020 in Miami, FL. She was born on May 5, 1922, in Loudon County, Tennessee, to Alva and Nell Whittle Frazier. She married her childhood sweetheart Clarence A. Freshour in 1946, and they had two children, a son, Stephen and a daughter, Donna. They were married nearly 67 years when he preceded her in death in 2012, They lived in Knoxville, Knox County for most of their life until moving to Miami in 2005, to be with their daughter and son-in -law, Donna and Bill Hagewood.
Jean became a Christian at the age of 10 and was a devoted Christian servant in her church. When she was 14, she started teaching Sunday School. Later in Knoxville at Smithwood Baptist Church where she was a member for many ears, she was the Educational Secretary and Director of the Nursery during her years there. Later at Beaver Dam Baptist Church, she restarted the WMU and was the Director for many years and worked along with Clarence in evangelism and outreach visitation.
God blessed Jean with great intelligence and many talents. Whatever she set her hand to she accomplished it in an admirable way. Besides her Christian service, she was a wonderful homemaker and cook, a beloved wife, a wonderful mother to Stephen and Donna, grandmother to Stephen and Andrew Hagewood, and great-grandmother to Shane, Savannah, Seth, Shawn, Leila, and Lana Hagewood. She is survived by her daughter Donna and those grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many nephews and nieces, and Vee Frazier, a sister-in-law.
As a young woman, while Clarence served his country overseas during World War II, Jean worked at a war factory in Knoxville (Fulton’s) where bombsights used by the armed forces were manufactured. Untrained as an engineer, she was able to help develop improvements to the sights. After she married and worked for years at Smithwood, she began to develop other talents: tax preparer, bookkeeper, artist in oils, master gardener of cultivated and wild flowers, crafts person, and finally genealogist. With Clarence’s help, she researched and wrote books on the various family branches. As her grandson Stephen said of her, “At 75, she got her first computer, taught herself how to use it and maintain a database,” in order to organize the genealogical records. She enjoyed e-mail and Facebook until the last few months of her life. She was able to keep up with friends, family, and fellow genealogist as well as do shopping online. An East Tennessee girl, she and Clarence were great University of Tennessee Vols fans and held football season tickets for decades.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband Clarence, her son Stephen, five brothers: Whittle (Stella), Julian (Irene), Phil, Jack, and Bill, and beloved niece Christy Frazier.
