James “Ray” Greer, age 92, of Knoxville went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 4, 2018. He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and was an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Ray was born and raised in Roan Mountain, TN. He was a graduate of Cloudland High School and East Tennessee State University. He was a devoted University of Tennessee fan. Ray served in the U.S. army from 1944-1946, where he fought with the Thundering Herd. He was a sergeant in Company C with the 58th Armored Infantry Battalion 8th Armored Division, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was the recipient of 3 Bronze Stars. Ray was a devoted husband and father. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Henrietta Buck Greer, parents John and Melissa Greer, brother Robert Greer, and sisters Florence Street and Ruth Greer. He is survived by daughters Connie Decker (Wayne), Donna Bean (Gary), and Karen Stith, grandchildren David and Beverly Decker, Melissa and Lee Elliot, Jonathan Decker, Kelley and Blair Durham of Nashville, Tracey and Brad Anderson, Ryan Stith of Hudson, Fl., Jeremiah and Sharley Stith of Clarksville, Jessica and Ben Belitz, as well as 12 great grandchildren; Pierce, Parker and Carolina Elliott, Kaitlynn and Taylor Decker, Ethan and Addy Durham, Brooks and Bennett Anderson, Ella and Samuel Stith and Rory Ray Belitz; and brother C.L. Greer and wife Wonda of Elizabethton, TN. The family would like to thank Avalon Hospice and Rays caregivers at Oakwood Assisted Living for the loving care they provided. The family will receive friends at Mynatt Funeral Home Fountain City Chapel on Tuesday, May 8th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. with a service to follow at 7:00 p.m., Allen Price officiating. Interment will be at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9th. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Beaver Dam Baptist Church, 4328 E. Emory Rd.
