James Edward Bates, age 80 of Knoxville, peacefully departed this life surrounded by his loving family on Monday, November 08, 2021 in his home. He was welcomed home by his Lord and Savior and many loved ones who have passed on before. Ed is survived by his sweetheart of 60 years, Reba. Other survivors include two sons, Jim (Tammy) and Mike (Shawna), seven grandchildren; Brandon (Haylea), Philip (Meghan), Katelyn (Brandon), Alexis, Kameron, Keely, Alyssa, and six great-grandchildren; Braxton, Bentlee, Blue, Holden, Berek, and Avery, and one remaining sibling, Della. He attended Way of the Cross Baptist Church for over forty years, where he served faithfully as a deacon and choir leader. You could find him many weekends digging ginseng in the mountains, hunting, or fishing on a lake. He also loved spending time camping in Alabama. Ed was an avid Kentucky Wildcat. However, his proudest accomplishment was his grandchildren, whom he often referred to as “the fruit of his loins.” We would like to give special thanks to his granddaughter Alexis for the exceptional care she provided during his illness. Our family would also like to express heartfelt gratitude to Amedisys Hospice and nurse. Jamie in our time of need. Due to covid, the family respectfully requests visitors wear masks during procession at visitation. The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00pm Thursday, November 11, 2021 at The Way of the Cross Baptist Church (2926 Whittle Springs Road Knoxville, Tennessee 37917) followed by a funeral service at 7:00pm, Rev. Tim Ramey officiating. Family and friends will meet 2:15pm Friday, November 12, 2021 at Mynatt Funeral Home, Fountain City Chapel to leave in procession for a 3:00pm graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery.
