Herbert Hoover Bomar

November 13, 1928 — February 23, 2020

Herbert (Herb) Hoover Bomar – age 91 of Knoxville passed away Sunday, February 23, 2020, at Fort Sanders Medical Center after suffering from a fall at home. Herb was born in Ivanhoe, Virginia. He was the son of the late Robert and Nora (Jefferson) Bomar. Herb served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. He joined the Navy at 17 years of age only to be sent home once it was determined that he had fudged his true age. He rejoined the Navy at 18, serving for 2 years only to be honorably discharged after the death of his father to be with his mother and sisters. He returned to the military as a paratrooper in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division rising to the rank of Sergeant. His duties in the Army included jumpmaster and medic. He married the love of his life, Faye Marie (Buckner) on July 18, 1953. Herb is survived by Faye and their two sons, Chuck Bomar, wife Amy, Easley, SC and Spencer Bomar, wife Dianne, Loveland, OH. Herb was so very proud of his five grandsons, Andrew, Jackson, Bailey, Bradley and Casey Bomar. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews all of whom affectionately called him “Uncle Hoover,” the name his mother and two of his sisters, Evelyn and Kathleen, always used to call him. Herb lived a very full life. He was a member of North Knoxville Baptist Church. He enjoyed coaching both youth football and basketball teams. For several years in the late sixties, he was the Santa at the Broadway Shopping Center. Herb was a retired welder by trade. He found many ways to make contributions to others long after his retirement. He was also very active in politics, serving as Ward Chairman at Beaumont Elementary School for several years. He loved politicking for his favorite city council candidates. There are many good people in this world but few come better or are more honest than Herb Bomar. He treated everyone with kindness and did not speak badly of anyone. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him and those ever so fortunate to have known him. Family will receive friends 12 to 2 pm, Saturday, February 29th at Mynatt Funeral Home Halls Chapel, 4131 E. Emory Road, Knoxville, with funeral service to follow at 2:00pm. Burial will be at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 E. Governor John Sevier Hwy., Knoxville, Monday, March 2, 11:30am.
