Herbert Brown

Herbert Lee Brown, age 88 of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, July 25th, 2012. The family home was in south Knoxville where he grew up on a 700-acre land grant given to them by the Governor of North Carolina in 1791. A member of the family has lived on at least a small part of the land for over 200 years. Herbert was an active and devoted member of Second United Methodist Church as well as Kewaiar Church in Maui, Hawaii. He taught Sunday school at Second Church for 66 years, and was a certified lay speaker in the Methodist Church. Herb was a Certified Public Accountant and owned his own practice, Herbert L. Brown and Co. CPA’s for over 40 years, retiring at age 76. He continued to work part-time until this year. Herbert was also a lifetime member of Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants. Preceded in death by his parents Nancy Lela and Major John Brown, brother J. Hoyle Brown, and nephew Thomas A. Brown. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Jean Clendenen Brown; daughters: Dr. Lee-Ann Murdaugh of Knoxville , Holly Brown Whiteley and husband Dr. John Whiteley of Athens, Georgia, and their children, Matthew, Ryan (Dr. Melinda Cro), Justin, and Rebecca; sister-in-law, Mrs. Barbara Whisman and brother-in-law Wallace E. Clendenen; nieces: Dr. Patricia Brown, Donna Clendenen Ellenberg (Charlie), Rev. Patricia Clendenen (Sven Erik Hansson); nephews: Knox County Commissioner Mike Brown (Jan), Gary Clendenen (Susan), Mark Clendenen and Philip Clendenen, Sr.Herbert served 3 years during WWII as a Sergeant with the 1st Marine Division. During this time, he participated in 3 first time landings on the South Pacific islands of Cape Gloucester, N.B., Peleliu, and Okinawa. He was wounded on July 4, 1945 by a hand-grenade while clearing caves of the enemy on Okinawa. The flag that covers his casket was flown over the U.S. Capitol in memory of Sgt. Herbert L. Brown U.S.M.C.The Teen Center of Knoxville and The Teen Board of Knoxville were his volunteer work and enjoyment. He had been on the adult board for 45 years and was instrumental in raising the funds for the new building on Kingston Pike as a permanent home to be used for the high school members. Teen Board members support over 20 charities in Knoxville. Honorary pallbearers: Friendship Class – Second United Methodist Church, Mr. Hal C. Ward, Adult Board of Directors Teen Center, Inc., Teen Board of Knoxville, Rep. John Duncan Jr., Mr. Ray Hand, Mr. Steve Hagood, Mr. Gaines Pittinger, Mrs. Kendra Patty, Mr. George M. Trotter III, Mr. Randall Williams, Mrs. Jeanne Sellars, Dr. Jill Hobby, Mrs. Tracy Kiumarsi, Mr. Jim Myers, Mrs. Teri Myers and Mr. Herbert Moncier. Visitation will be at Second United Methodist Church, 1524 Western Avenue on Saturday, July 28th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with memorial service to follow. Private entombment to be held at Mausoleum Chapel of Highland Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Herbert’s name to Second Methodist Church 1524 Western Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37921 or Teen Center, Inc., The Teen Board of Knoxville, Box 10434 Knoxville, TN, 37939.
