Hazel Jane Bates Barnard passed away Sunday, March 17. She was the widow of Ernest Paris Barnard and the daughter of the late William and Cordie Bates of Grainger County. Jane was raised in Grainger County. After her marriage to Ernest in 1950, she made a home for her family in several places across the US as she and Ernest traveled with his career in the Air Force. They retired to Knoxville where she pursued her hobbies of reading and gardening. She later enjoyed many hours playing with her grandchildren. She leaves a legacy of loving and caring. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Sarah Jane Horton. She is survived by her children Karen Horton and husband Bill of Kingsport, Judi Webb and husband Phil of Chesapeake, VA, and Leigh Ann Johnson of Knoxville. She is also survived by her grandchildren Luke Horton, Will Horton, Jennifer Webb Janis, Brian Webb, Kevin Webb, R. Eric Johnson, and Lauren Johnson, and two great grandchildren Destiny Collins and Cameron Horton. Her brother Eulis Bates of Rutledge also survives her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 Eighteenth Street, N.W., Washington D.C. 20006. Funeral service will be 7 PM Tuesday at Mynatt Funeral Home Halls Chapel. Family and friends will meet 9:45 AM Wednesday at Greenwood Cemetery for interment at 10:00 AM. Family will receive friends Tuesday, March 19, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Mynatt Funeral Home Halls Chapel.
