Gregg Alan Martin, age 63 of Knoxville, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 24, 2022. He had a strong Christian faith and was quick to offer an eloquent prayer at family gatherings. Gregg was an avid hiker and backpacker, logging hundreds of nights in the Great Smoky Mountains. He was proud of his nearly three decades of work with BellSouth. Throughout his life, Gregg enjoyed many hobbies, including metal detecting, antique collecting, water skiing, and bowling. He was known for being a handyman with the ability to fix anything. Gregg was a talented photographer and left behind thousands of photos that his family will always cherish.
Gregg had a great sense of humor, and his quick wit always kept family and friends laughing during game nights. Gregg had a kind heart and never hesitated to help others. He loved his family and friends, and valued the time they spent together. Bad to the bone, Gregg loved rock and roll and enjoyed attending concerts. He was an animal lover who had many beloved pets throughout the years and enjoyed all wildlife.
Gregg was preceded in death by his parents, John Taylor Martin and Charlotte Martin; sister and brother-in-law, Jan Martin Bradford Slusser and Colin Slusser; niece, Cathryn Bradford; and step-granddaughter, Mahayla Pate.
Left to cherish his precious memory are his beloved son and daughter-in-law, John Taylor Martin II (his “Buddyyyyy”) and Meghan Martin; beloved daughter and future son-in-law, Hillary Martin (his “Monkey Poo”) and David Evans; brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Wendy Martin; niece, Lakin Martin; nephew, Christopher Bradford; baby mama and best friend, Carolyn Martin (his “Etta Mae”); ex-wife and best friend, Kathy Martin; stepdaughter, Sarah Simpson; step-granddaughter, Olivia Pate; beloved cat, Bear; and “other daughter,” Josie Sieben.
A celebration of Gregg’s life will be held at a later date, and his ashes will be scattered, smothered, and covered in the Great Smoky Mountains. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gregg’s memory to Friends of the Smokies.
“Head to the mountains, young man!”
