George Kenneth Bowman

George Kenneth Bowman, Sr (nickname “Ears”) was born May 12,1938 in Washington County, VA & passed away on July 30, 2021 in Powell,TN. George grew up in Abingdon, VA & attended William King High School. He then graduated from Emory & Henry College in 1963 with a degree in education. He was a four-year baseball letterman. At graduation, he held Emory & Henry records for his career batting average (.441), single season batting average (.591), career hits & career doubles. He also pitched & served as assistant coach during his senior year. Following his years in college, he played semi-pro baseball in Greenville, TN & Saltville, VA. In addition to his post graduate career, George was active in the Washington County School System where he taught & coached for 28 years. During this time, he lived in Bristol, VA & was Coach of the Year at Holston High School. He went on to coach at Virginia Intermont College where his son, Ken, played baseball & coached as well. George was a member of Callahan Road Baptist Church. In 2008, he & his wife Martha moved to Powell to be near their son Ken & his wife Shannon. George was preceded in death by his parents M.V. & Gaye Bowman; his brothers Pete Bowman, Robert Bowman & sister Doris Umberger. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Martha Cassell Bowman, son Ken & wife Shannon Bowman, brother Mack & wife Anne Bowman, Watkinsville, Georgia; sisters Betty Hurd, Knoxville TN & Ruth Collier, Kingsport, TN. Along with many special sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews & friends. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 from 1:00pm - 2:00pm at Callahan Road Baptist Church with a Funeral Service following at 2:00pm. Pastor Marc Sasser will officiate. Family & friends are asked to meet by 12:45pm on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens Abingdon, VA for a 1:00pm graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emory & Henry Baseball, The American Diabetes Association or to Callahan Road Baptist Church.
