Garnett A. Dill, Jr. (age 72), son of Edna Pauline Dill & Garnett A. Dill, Sr., passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 1, from several service-related illnesses. Garnett resided in Corryton, TN with his wife of 32 years, Tina Dill. He is preceded in death by his parents, his stepson - Dustin Shane Davis, and his nephews - Ronnie & Robbie Schield of Belleville, IL.
He is survived by his wife, Tina of Corryton, TN, daughter Karissa Marler of Jacksboro, TN, son Garnett, III of Oxford, MS, step-daughter and son-in-law, Sara & Jerome Smith of Knoxville, TN, and granddaughters, Lake Marler, Rylee Smith, Reagan Smith, and Aubree Smith. He is furthermore survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Ron and Judy Schield of Belleville, IL, sister and brother-in-law, Beverly & Charles Brooks of Powell, TN, sister-in-law Donna Mack and mother-in-law Marjorie Cleveland of Knoxville, TN, Lake’s father, Andrew Marler, and many beloved nieces, nephews, & cousins.
Garnett was a member of South Clinton Baptist Church and grew up in Clinton, TN. He was a proud Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, and served his country valiantly during the Vietnam War in 1968 -1969. After the Marine Corps, he felt he needed to give back & joined the Peace Corp for two years, serving in India.
In 1972, after attending Roane State Community College, he began a career in property appraisal, traveling and working in several states to manage countywide property reappraisals. After several years of traveling, he and his family settled back in Knoxville, where he worked ten years for the Knox County Property Assessors office. He managed reappraisal projects and other property appraisal projects. In 2001, he began working for the TN Highway Department (TDOT), appraising property to purchase for road development. He retired in 2011 due to declining health.
Garnett enjoyed all outdoor activities, including fishing, boating, & hiking. He especially enjoyed camping with his family. He was an animal-lover, and often took strays to care for. He had a unique ability to make people laugh, and he was usually found as the center of attention for his humor and antics.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, family, and friends.
Garnett’s family will host a call of convenience at Mynatt Funeral Home on Rennoc Road in Fountain City from 12-7pm on Monday, December 7, 2020. For family, there will be a closed graveside service with military honors on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at 9:30am.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to Young Williams Animal Shelter, Knoxville, TN, or Disabled Veterans of America.
