Ferd Hall lived a full and blessed life, loving God and family above all else. Known as a positive, intelligent, and gentle man, he enjoyed a wonderful marriage to Marie for nearly 58 years. They embraced their Catholic faith together, and Ferd longed to join Marie in heaven, as she predeceased him in 2011. Their marriage was an exceptional example of a loving environment in which to raise four sons, as family was the center of their world. Their sons Tom (Karen), Mark (Norene), Matt (Amy), Pete (Jill), twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren continue to celebrate Ferd and Marie’s lives. Ferd was the eldest of five children of Anton Ferdinand and Florence Hall, who along with his brother John, predeceased him, and is survived by his two sisters Mary (Dan) HIrst, Ann (Dan) Curtis, and brother Joe (Carol) Hall.
While he was born in Chicago in 1932, Ferd grew up primarily in the San Francisco Bay area where he attended Redwood and Junipero Serra high schools in San Mateo, and graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1953, also the year he and Marie were married. Ferd spent 15 years in various management positions with Western Gear Corporation, which eventually lead to the family moving to Los Alamitos, CA in 1959 and to Lake Stevens, WA in 1968. He left engineering in 1971 to join Transamerica Life Ins. Co., subsequently forming Larson Hall Insurance Agency, and becoming general agent for a wide territory in the NW of Washington. He and Marie retired to Leisure World in Laguna Woods, CA in 1994.
Having an exceptionally strong devotion to his Catholic faith and what that entails, as well as compassion for others through charitable and community service, Ferd was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was proud to have been an usher, lector and Eucharistic minister in every parish he was involved with over the years. He served as a town councilman for the Town of Lake Stevens, was on the local council of the Snohomish County Boy Scouts of America, was a board member of the local March of Dimes organization, a Rotarian, and was honored to have served as an Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge 479 in Everett, Wa. In retirement Ferd continued his service to his community as a “Red Coat Volunteer Information Ambassador” at John Wayne Airport Orange County, CA. He loved sports, watching his sons and grandchildren in their sporting endeavors, and followed the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers closely. An avid golfer, Ferd belonged to Everett Golf and Country Club, Everett, WA before retiring to Southern California and joining the Laguna Woods Men’s Golf Club.
Family and friends, while celebrating Ferd’s wonderful life, will miss his love of family and faith, gentle spirit, and intelligent and thoughtful counsel. His advice in most situations was a simple, “you know what to do, whatever’s right.” He always knew what was right and lived his life by The Golden Rule.
A private funeral Mass is scheduled in Knoxville for Saturday, January 13, and interment the following week at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest, CA.
