Elizabeth Jacqueline (Jackie) Dean died Aug. 6, 2022, from Alzheimer’s disease. She was 79. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Jackie Johnstone grew up in St. Augustine, FL, where she graduated from high school. Jackie earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, FL. A mother of three girls and one boy, Jackie raised her children in Palatka, FL, and Knoxville, TN. She spent her career as a teacher and/or guidance counselor in Putnam County and Brevard County schools in Florida and at Doyle High School in Knoxville, TN. She was a lifelong lover of reading and worked with children at various churches where she lived in Melbourne, FL, even after her retirement from teaching. She was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Melbourne, FL. She adored animals of all kinds, most recently her Pomeranian, Sampson. She loved sports of all kinds and idolized Warriors superstar, Steph Curry and golf legend, Tiger Woods. She enjoyed playing bridge, collecting Nippon porcelain and ceramic chickens and traveling, most of all. Jackie inherited a love of traveling around the world from her parents. In recent years, she traveled extensively with her children, grandchildren and close friends. Three especially wonderful trips included a cruise of the Greek Isles and Adriatic, a trip to Bar Harbor, Maine, and a land stay and cruise of Oahu and the Hawaiian Islands. She was preceded in death by her parents MacDonald and Betty Johnstone of St. Augustine, FL, and her son-in-law David Sikes of Gainesville, FL. She is survived by daughters Joanne (Jim) Dean of Knoxville, TN; Janine Sikes of Gainesville, FL: Julie (Greg) Lowe of Jacksonville, FL; and son Thomas (Jennifer) Young of Sorrento, FL; grandchildren Jeremy Thompson of Salem, OR; Jade Thompson of Laurel, MD; Jalin Thompson of Sarasota, FL; Jacob (Kayla) Dean of Knoxville, TN; Sara Dean of Chattanooga, TN; Chris (Alex) Young of Dallas, TX; Conner (Kaylee) Young of Citra, FL; and great-grandson Ariston Thompson Wilson of Sarasota, FL.
