Edna Diana Whaley (age 80) of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away October 3, 2023 at UT Hospital, after only a few days since her beloved husband Charles Norman Whaley, Sr. went home to be with the Lord.
Diana was dedicated to her family, including her husband, parents, children, grand-daughters, aunts, uncles, and cousins. After her sons graduated from high school, she returned to the University of Tennessee to get her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and served as an RN with John Tarelton Homes in Knoxville. She was also a long-time volunteer with the American Red Cross, where she served in numerous disasters including the World Trade Center after 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, onboard the USNS Comfort after earthquakes in Haiti, and the Gatlinburg wildfires. She was honored to receive the Florence Nightingale Award from the International Committee of the Red Cross. Over the years, she volunteered with numerous other groups including the Gideons, 16 years with the Voice of the Children Haitian mission, and the Paulette Volunteer Fire Department. She was a member of New Beverly Baptist Church, and previously was a member at Union Chapel Baptist Church and North Rockwood Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Charles Norman Whaley, Sr; father, Joe Evans; mother, Lillie Surber Evans; brother lost at birth, and grand-daughter Amy Whaley.
She is survived by her sons and daughters in law; Charles, Jr. and his wife Jeanne, Chris and his wife Dawn, T.J. and his wife Jennifer; grand-daughters, Erin, Chloe, Hannah, and Olivia, "adopted" granddaughter Sasha Stout, her brother, Mike Evans and his wife Amy, and a host of cherished family.
Receiving of friends will be in conjunction with her husband's service at Mynatt's Funeral Home, Halls Chapel, Friday, October 6, 2023 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with Sammy Sawyer leading a service at 7:00 PM. Family and friends will meet 12:45 PM Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Greenwood Cemetery (Tazewell Pike), for a 1:00 PM Interment. Per her wishes, her ashes will be later buried with her mother and father in Jellico, TN in a service yet to be scheduled.
