Dorothy K. Grant

December 3, 1927 — April 12, 2021

Dorothy “Dotty” Grant age 93 of Fountain City, born Dorothy Francis Kottnauer on December 3, 1927, to Henry and Bridget Kottnauer in Bronx, New York, passed away peacefully at home with her adoring daughter by her side on Monday, April 12, 2021. She was of the Catholic faith and a long time member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Dotty married the love of her life, John T. Grant, and had four children: Douglas, Brian, Christian and Victoria (Tory). They moved to East Tennessee in 1960, where they made their home in Fountain City for 55 years. In recent years, Dotty moved to Powell to live with her daughter Tory. She is predeceased by her husband and three sons. She is survived by daughter, Tory, granddaughter, Jennifer Smith (Richard), and great grandson, Andrew Smith, and great granddaughter, Naomi Smith. Dotty’s role as a mother brought her the most happiness and fulfillment, but her love of reading, which was almost obsessive, was her solace and escape. She many times recanted the story of receiving her own library card at the age of eight, and it was as if the world had been handed to her on a silver platter. Dotty did not travel the world by plane, train, or automobile but instead explored and educated herself through her voracious book reading. Always the frugal, practical one, she did not own a treasure trove of books but rather relied on the public library and counted many library staff over the years as friends. “You can take the girl out of the big city, but you can’t take the big city out of the girl.” Dotty maintained her New York accent, never adopting a southern drawl. She drank her tea—hot with cream and sugar—and appreciated fine art, live theater, PBS shows, opera and good rock’n roll. Watching episodes of Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond tickled her funny bone, and Jeopardy kept her mind sharp. Her West Highland Terrier, Duffy, brought her endless delight and comfort. Many thanks to the UT Hospice team, with special thanks to her hospice nurse, Stephanie, as well as close family friend Xander Carey, who provided comfort and care during Dotty’s last months. Covid compliant receiving of friends will be held at Mynatt Funeral Home Fountain City on Thursday, April 15, 2021 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2021 at Lynnhurst Cemetery for an 11:00 a.m. Graveside service Father Bill McNeeley officiating.
