Dorothy Marie Hammock, age 73, of Knoxville, TN passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center on the very floor where she worked for years; she was surrounded by those who loved and cherished her, just as much as she adored and loved them in return.
Known by Momma, Mamaw Dorothy, Gran, or Nana, Ms. Dorothy was always a force to be reckoned with! Most days, she could be found walking around with a cup of ice in one hand, a scratch-off in the other, and little-to-no filter - ever. She loved BINGO, Community Chess, yard sales, and Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach was Dorothy’s happy place. She was strong and independent and loving and kind. On Sunday mornings, you were expected to be at breakfast – the whole neighborhood was expected to be at breakfast - because that was the kind of person Dorothy was. If Dorothy knew you, you were family. And for Dorothy, her family was her life.
There are two things you could always count on where Dorothy was concerned:
Never mess with Momma – because you may not be prepared for what could happen next.
Never mess with Mamaw Dorothy’s grandbabies – because you will not be prepared for what will happen next!
Each of her 30 grandchildren (great-grands included) held their very own sparkle in Dorothy’s eyes. Mamaw’s heart was always with her grandbabies and her grandbabies knew it.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Lewis Hammock; her daughter, Della Marie Hammock; parents, Brad and Mamie Dunlap; and siblings Paul Dunlap and Jody Dunlap.
She is survived by her children, Jr. Ray Hammock, Melissa Holland, and Scotty Hammock (Michelle); grandchildren, Willie Hall, Cherish Miller, Steven Hammock, Katelyn Evans, Jacob Evans, Johnathon “Zach” Holland, Kateland Holland, McKenzie Holland, Brantley Lynch, Paige Lynch, Kailah Tucker, Addison Hammock, Lexie Lawson, Keegan Carter, Keiara Carter, Megan Rutherford, and Mason McLemore; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Hall, Whitley Hall, Riley Hall, Vanessa Miller, Savannah Miller, Miya Letourneau, Denver Rutherford, Delilah Rutherford, Baby Desirae, LaVon Frances, Ya’Voni Frances, Kur’e Lawson and Amara Lawson; siblings, Imogene Nation (Eugene); Brad “Bubby” Dunlap, Mary Black (Bobby), Sandra (Baby-Doll) Sweat, and Sissy Hackler (Benny); extra special friends Misty Evans and Russell Mayes, the entire Miller and Sammons families; many more aunts, uncles, cousins, co-workers, neighbors and friends; Dorothy is also survived by her precious pups, Storm the Boxer and Presley the Boston Terrier.
