Dorothy A. Hindelang was born Dorothy Clarke on Long Island, NY. in January of 1931. She had 5 siblings and she was a devout Catholic. During the depression it took the combined effort of the family to bring in whatever they could to keep the family going. Everyone worked hard and people who lived in the Babylon area would enjoy their leisure time at the Argyle Lake Park. This is where she would eventually meet John Hindelang, her future husband and lifelong partner. They were married in 1952 and would spend the next 61 years together. The couple worked hard and saved everything they could until they were able to buy their first home in Central Islip on Long Island. The Hindelangs had 5 children, Dorothy, John Jr, Clark, Barbara and Glenn. Dorothy and John both loved the water so any time they got the chance they would pack up the kids and head for the beach or take their boat out to enjoy the scenic beauty of the area. With 5 children it is obvious that Dorothy’s primary job over the years was Mother and Wife. She excelled at both. She also held a number of jobs around the community at different times including one that she found very fulfilling at Pilgrim State Hospital. As the years went by the real estate values of anything in close proximity to New York City started to skyrocket. Like thousands of native Long Islanders they decided to cash in their chips and head for South Florida. They decided that Ft. Lauderdale was a perfect fit for them with its constant sunshine, NO real winter to deal with and very affordable homes.Four of the 5 children had decided to come to South FL as well. The oldest daughter Dorothy married her high school sweetheart and continued to live there on Long Island. A few years later when John Seniors mother who lived back on Long Island passed away she left her home to John. So Dorothy and John went back to Long Island to handle his mother’s final affairs. They were back on Long Island and several years passed but they had really come to love Florida and so they decided to sell Johns mothers house and move back to Florida. Back in Florida they found a nice lot around the Sebastian area and built a house. They loved the area and spent many years there. When Dorothy started to have some health issues she and John felt like they would be more comfortable a little closer to their daughter Barbara who lived in Knoxville, TN. She was most able to help them at that time. They moved for the final time and settled into life in East TN. She was with her husband John until the end. They both passed away after a full and wonderful life together within a few months of each other. Together… in death as they were in life. She is survived by Daughters Dorothy of Long Island, NY and Barbara of Knoxville TN and Sons Clark of Lebanon, TN and Glenn of South FL. She was preceded in death by her husband John of Knoxville and her oldest son Johnny, also of Knoxville, TN.
