Donald Leo Newton

Judge Donald Leo Newton went to be with our Lord, July 1, 2022, at Sacred Ground Hospice House in Knoxville, Tn. He was born July 17, 1940, in Washington, DC., to Donald Leo Newton and Carolyn McKenzie Blount Newton of Lanham, Maryland. Don received his undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from Georgia State University and a Juris Doctor degree from The University of Georgia. Don had a long career working for the Federal Government. He was a Navy veteran, a correctional officer for the United States Penitentiary Atlanta, an investigator for the IRS in South Carolina and a legal instructor for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Ga. After retiring from the federal government, Don went on to become a magistrate judge for Glynn County, Ga. He also wrote a column for the Glynco Observer newspaper called ‘Legally Speaking’. Upon full retirement, Don moved to Knoxville, Tn., with his wife. Don is preceded in death by his parents, Don, and Carolyn (her husband, Paul Cowan), paternal grandparents, Leo M. Newton and Mabel Burroughs Newton of Flint, Mi., maternal grandparents, Benjamin Bluford Blount and Julia Villard Blount of Wrightsville, Ga., in-laws, Earl Clifton Galyon and Marie Elizabeth Thompson Galyon, of Knoxville, Tn., sister-in-law, Marie Gay Galyon Cross and her husband, Lloyd David Cross, of Powell, TN. and granddaughter, Carolyn Elizabeth Gates, of Clanton, Al. Don is survived by his wife, Brenda Lee Galyon Newton, of Knoxville, Tn., as well as - Daughter, Katheryn E. Newton of Possum Grape, Ar. - Daughter, Michelle M. Newton of Clanton, Al. (her son, Brandon L. Ellis, and his son Elijah L. Ellis also of Clanton, Al.) (her son, Timothy D. Holcomb, of Hortense, Ga.) (her daughter, Angel M. Ferris of Louisiana) - Daughter, Joyce J. Beck of Marietta, Ga. (her daughter, Ashley N. Beck and son, Daniel C. Beck, both of Marietta, Ga.) - Daughter, Donnell N. Lancaster and her husband, A. Shane Lancaster, of Mableton, Ga. - Brother, Joel B. Newton and his wife, Valorie Newton, of Durham, NC. (their son, Joel P. Newton, of Durham, NC.) (their son, D. Casey Newton, and his family, of Raleigh, NC.) - Stepbrother, Larry C. Cowan, of Burlington, NC.
