Darryl Eugene Dunbar, age 83 of Knoxville left this earth and his tattered, worn body on April 2, 2022. After a five month battle with MDS, a rare blood cancer, he is finally at peace.
Darryl was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He lived life to the fullest, rarely met a stranger, hardly made an enemy, and was slow to judge. He was a good man. Darryl played basketball at the University of Cincinnati, served in the Army as a medic, and was a successful salesman, retiring from Cooper Container in 2005. He then went to work on his golf game…straight down the middle every time with quite the short game.
Darryl is preceded in death by parents Reuben & Velva, brother Don, niece Amy, brother Tom Dunbar, and in-laws Tom & Beulah Stump. He grew up surrounded by a loving family who worked hard, played hard, lived by the “Golden Rule” and always put family first.
He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Beverly, daughter Deborah, son in law Mike Mauldin, granddaughter, Kinsley Cox, great granddaughter Kapri Faith, sister Joan (Dan) Funkhouser, brother Jim (Diane) Dunbar, in-laws Dave (Nedine) Stump, several nieces and nephews, special caretaker Ashley Massengill, and many friends who were like family.
People remember Darryl for his genuine approachability, sense of humor, strong work ethic, and calming influence. He was smart. He was funny. He was kind. He genuinely loved life and cared about others. He also gave back…coaching youth sports, donating to various charities, and volunteering in his later years at the VA, Tennova Hospital and delivering Mobile Meals. His faith was seen by the way he lived his life as an honest, righteous man, and by the way he loved. “Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” Rom 13:10
The family has planned a Celebration of Life Friday, April 15 from 6-8 pm at Beaver Brook Country Club. Darryl will be cremated and a service will be held at the Veteran's Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Compassion in Action - a local non-profit helping cancer patients solely in East TN - 3201 Chantilly Drive - Knoxville, TN 37917 or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - https://pages.lls.org/mwoy/tnk/knox22/dmauldin.
