Danny Clayton Atchley Sr., age 69 of Knoxville, TN, walked into his eternal home and into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, June 20th. His passing came quickly and leaves his family with deep sorrow. His greatest love was the Lord, and Danny faithfully served Him. For 45 years, he was known as "Servant." He was a dedicated member and head deacon of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church. To many, Danny is known as "Coach." For 28 years he coached several baseball, football, and basketball teams. Although the teams may no longer be together, Danny never lost admiration for "his boys." To some, Danny was known as "Cap." Though he was merely Lance Corporal, Danny received many medals and honors, including two Purple Hearts for injuries endured during the Vietnam War. [In fact, he was wounded so badly during battle that he died and his toe was actually tagged. But thankfully to God's amazing grace and intervention, God brought him back to life.] He humbly served his country and was proud to be a brother in the United States Marine Corps. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Earnest and Viola Atchley and brother James Russell. He is survived by his one true love and soul mate of 48 years, Sherry Atchley. He adored his family and leaves behind his oldest son, Danny Atchley Jr. and sons Tyler and Camden Atchley; youngest son Chris, wife Amanda Atchley, and their son Ryan;. He is also survived by his siblings: Bill Russell, Johnny (Mary) Atchley, Faye Thornton, David Atchley, Marilyn Atchley Zavala, Carolyn Atchley, Judy Richards, and Tina Atchley, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. The family will receive friends Monday, June 26 from 5-7pm at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, 1518 New York Ave Knoxville, Tennessee 37919. A funeral service will be held at the church 7pm with the following honorary pastors officiating: Tim Wallace and Bob Zavattieri, Reverend Josh Cagley, and Pastor Michael Killion. Family and friends will meet at 9:15am in the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on Gov. John Sevier Highway on Tuesday for the final committal. Full military honors will be provided by United States Marine and The East Tennessee Honor Guard.
