Petree, Colbert G. Jr., age 85, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, September 12th, 2017. He was a member of Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Powell, Tennessee where he served as choir director for thirty years. A graduate of Central High School Class of 1949, Mr. Petree attended Carson-Newman College and later the University of Tennessee where he earned bachelors and masters degrees in Music Education. He also served in the United States Air Force where he was a member of several Air Force bands. A versatile musician and educator, Mr. Petree taught instrumental music in the Knoxville City and Knox County schools for thirty-five years. Among the schools were Powell High School, Northwest Middle School, and many area elementary schools. Mr. Petree also performed with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra under David Van Vactor, many local dance bands, and a wide range of musical shows. He was an Honorary Life Member of the East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association and a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity. He was preceded in death by his parents Colbert G. Petree, Sr. and Ruth Livingstone Petree of Powell. He is Survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha Carpenter Petree; daughter and son-in-law Patty and Jeff Turner of Knoxville, son and daughter-in-law Philip and Ellen Petree of Knoxville, daughter and son-in-law Amy and Jeff Thomas of Knoxville; grandchildren, Jack and David Thomas of Knoxville, and Caroline and Molly Petree of Knoxville; sister and brother-in-law Johanna and Robert Dilworth of Knoxville, sister-in-law Emma Curtis of Powell; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 15, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church, followed by the funeral service at 7:00 p.m. The Reverend Dr. Thomas Sweet will officiate. Family and friends will meet 10:45 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Lynnhurst Cemetery for 11:00 a.m. Interment. Funeral arrangements by Mynatt Funeral Home.
