Clayton E. Sharp, age 101 of Corryton passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at his home. He was born on a dairy farm on Beeler Road on January 12, 1922, to the late Reuben and Mary Sharp. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the US Army and later in the U.S. Coast Guard. Clayton was a graduate of Gibbs High School Class of 1940, and life-long member of Clapp’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Clayton and his good friend, Rusty Carpenter, started Boy Scout Troop 500, where he served as scout master for many years and helped in the formation of many young men as they achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a member of Gibbs Ruritan Club for over 50 years, retired from Robertshaw and Fulton Sylphon, and was an officer of Fulton Credit Union. Clayton learned the art of Blacksmithing and was an official blacksmith at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris. He volunteered at St. Mary’s Medical Center and later at Tennova Residential Hospice in Halls. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years Betty Loy Sharp, siblings, Lee, Emert, Ollie, Glen, Jennings, Foster, Elmer and Effie. Survived by sons Rancy (Debbie) Sharp and Monty Sharp, grandchildren Austin, Tyler, Logan, and Noah Sharp, sisters-in-law Peggy Sharp and Ruth Sharp, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family would like to thank all the caregivers for their love and compassion and also to Caris Hospice. Special thanks to Dr. Srinivasa Chintalapudi, for his special care and attention to Clayton for many years. The family will receive friends 12:00pm-2:00pm Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Clapp’s Chapel United Methodist Church, followed by a 2:00pm Celebration of Life service, Dr. Chris Stanfield officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard.
