Clara Smathers, age 87, a life-long resident of Knoxville, passed away April 22, 2017. Clara practiced as a nurse
in her career, but will always be remembered for raising a large vibrant family who successfully made their
way in the world.
Clara loved to hike in the mountains, can vegetables at harvest time, and create intricate quilts. She also was a
long-term member of Fountain City Presbyterian Church, and she supported Friends of the Smokies, and
Project Linus to provide warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill.
Clara is preceded in death by her sister Mona Schwartz and parents Myrtle and Joseph Schwartz.
Clara is survived by children (and spouses) Debbie Doss (Larry), Karen Miller (Bruce), Tommy Smathers (Dale),
Emily Smathers (Bob); 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sister Julia Hart; cousins Bobby and Carol Keith;
and other cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday April 28, 2017, Mynatt Funeral Home, Fountain City from 6:00 p.m.-
8:00 p.m. The service will follow at 8:00 pm. Family and friends will also meet 10:45 a.m., Saturday at
Lynnhurst Cemetery for an 11:00 a.m. interment.
