Captain Charlie Jay Thompson passed away Sunday, November 11 at the age of 78 in Fort Mill, South Carolina. A graduate of Fulton High School (Class of '58), he had lived in Knoxville his entire life until June of 2018, when he moved to Fort Mill, SC to be closer to his daughter and family. Charlie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a devoted Knoxville Police Officer for 35 years, an avid golfer, a talented painter, a HUGE lady Vols fan and a member of Fountain City United Methodist Church.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents James Bryant and Rillie Thompson, brothers JB, Andrew, Daniel, Louis, Fred, and Donald Thompson.
He is survived by wife of 53 years Linda Carter Thompson, brother Joe Thompson, daughter and son in law Terri and Robert Ober, granddaughters Payton Elizabeth and Tessa Paige Ober, sisters in law Kathy Huelsemann, Inge Thompson and MiSoon Thompson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed beyond words.
The family will receive friends Friday, November 16 from 4-6 pm at Mynatt Funeral Home in Fountain City, 2829 Rennoc Rd, Knoxville. There will be a service at 6:00 pm. Family and friends will meet at 11:45am on Saturday, November 17 at Lynnhurst Cemetery for a 12:00pm graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge #2 (Knoxville Branch).
