Charles Ruben Shankles, age 85, of Knoxville, went to be with his Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at his home with his family by his side. Ordained deacon at North Acres Baptist Church in 1961. Member of Sheet metal Workers Local #5. Retired from Rust Engineers of Oak Ridge. Born to Joseph Grant and Effie Lyons Shankles on April 4, 1927 in Ft. Payne, Alabama. Preceded in death by parents, sisters: Dorothy and Ethelene and brother Willis Grant. Survivors: wife of 66 years, Edith Hargis Shankles. Sons and daughters-in-law: Rev. Willis and Charlotte, Charles and Charlotte, Danny and Terry and Bobby. Sister, Wilma Sue. Brother Billy Ray and wife Barbara Sue. Grandchildren: Sonny and Sally, Stephanie and Justin (Beard), Rebekah and Bruce (Garraway), Christy and Jake (Hawkins), Genevie and Chad (Pilayo), Denise Ivankovich and Nathan Shankles. Great-grandchildren: Hannah, Will, Samuel, Sarah, Andrew, Jacob, Landon, Lanie, Logan, Levi, Landen, Camren, Emily, Grant, Gavin, Peyton, Amalee, J.C., Zoe, Keola and Jay. Several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Funeral service 7pm Thursday, Mynatt Funeral Home Fountain City. Rev. Willis Shankles, Rev. J.W. Lusk officiating. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:15 am Friday and proceed to Roseberry Cemetery for interment at 11 am. The family will receive friends 5-7 pm Thursday at Mynatt Funeral Home, Fountain City.
