Carolyn Buchanan Smith

March 2, 1945 — September 16, 2017

Our dearly loved Carolyn departed her earthly life into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, September 16th, 2017 after suffering from a well-fought battle against cancer. Her gift to us as a wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, and friend, was sincere love and deep devotion. She was quick with a smile, a hug, and a heartfelt concern for all who knew her. Carolyn was born in 1945 to Jim and Maude Buchanan in Oak Ridge, TN. She was a graduate of the 1964 class of Fulton high school. She was married to Roy T. (Sandy) Smith for 46 years, 2 months, and 12 days. From that union, their son Randy was born. They have resided in the Halls community and have been faithful and active members of Sharon Baptist church for 43 years. At Sharon Baptist she taught countless four-year-old children about the love, grace, and promises of Jesus. Carolyn worked as a teacher assistant at Brickey-McCloud Elementary School for 25 years, where she developed many deep, caring, and faithful friendships. After retirement she also enjoyed substitute teaching at Powell High School & Halls High School where she continued to influence the lives of many and develop even more friendships. Carolyn’s greatest joys were being a wife, mother, and grandmother to her 3 grandsons. Carolyn is survived by: husband Roy T. (Sandy) Smith, Knoxville; son: Randall (Randy) Bruce Smith; grandsons: Connor, Davis, and Griffin Smith; daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Lizzy) Smith, all of Brentwood, TN.; siblings: Pete & Patsy Buchanan, Bill & Pat Buchanan, and Thelma Vincent; brothers and sisters in law: Ann Smith Faulkner, Ellen Smith Fox & W.S. Everett, Rhea & Brenda Smith, Janet Bower, and dozens of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Carolyn had many friends and the family would like to acknowledge the special friendships of Johnnie Stapleton, Brenda Miller, and Donna Jones who walked tirelessly and faithfully through many trials, including this final battle with cancer. The family would also like to acknowledge Terri Spurgeon, Sherri Lay, and Vickie Burke who Carolyn loved as her own children. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sharon Baptist Church building fund. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 19, 2017 from 5:00 – 7:30 PM with the funeral at 7:30 PM at Sharon Baptist Church located at 7916 Pedigo Rd, Powell, TN 37938.
