Burton Terrell McWhirter, age 97, died peacefully at home on January 29, 2018. Terrell was born in Campaign, Tn. on October 22, 1920 on his family’s farm. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corp, stationed in Guam. After the war, he graduated from Vanderbilt University where he played football under Coach Red Sanders and Coach Bear Bryant. He completed graduate work there after earning his degree in Political Science. He is predeceased by his parents: Newton Powell McWhirter and Audry Athene Connell McWhirter, his wife of 39 years Gertrude Hays Stegall McWhirter, his son Burton Terrell (Tad) McWhirter Jr., brother Powell, and sister Marlyn. He is survived by his wife Anne Dean McWhirter, his daughter Eleanor Hays McWhirter, son John Donelson McWhirter, stepsons: Dean (Mary), Reid (Susan) Farmer, and Chuck (Mary Nell) Farmer, daughter-in-law Frances McWhirter Andrews, 15 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday February 3, 2018 at Second Presbyterian Church of Knoxville. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. with services following at 3:00 p.m. The family wishes to thank all of his caregivers in the past two years, with special thanks to longtime friend, Miriam Widener. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice. A memorial service will also be held in Nashville, TN on Saturday February 10, 2018 at West End United Methodist church. The family will receive friends at 12:30 p.m., with services following at 2 p.m.
