Rev. Billy R Mynatt, Sr passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 21, 2020 while in hospice care. Billy was born on November 13, 1931 in Knoxville, TN to parents, Joseph Carl Mynatt and Edna Irene (Lane) Mynatt. Billy graduated from Stair Technical High School in Knoxville and attended Carson Newman College and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as pastor and ministerial staff member of eight churches in the Knoxville area. Billy also served in various volunteer leadership positions in the Knox County Association of Baptists and Tennessee Baptist Convention. Later in his career, he formed the Bill Mynatt Agency with his son, Bill, Jr., and provided insurance products to many area church staffs and private schools. Billy served as a volunteer chaplain for many years at East Tennessee Baptist Hospital, Knoxville, and at the currently named Tennova Turkey Creek Medical Center. Billy is a current member of First Baptist Church, Knoxville, where he has enjoyed the television ministry in his older years.
One of Billy’s greatest joys in life has been his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Rev. Harry Mynatt, Sr., Bobby Mynatt, Johnny Mynatt, and Betty Casale. He was also preceded in death by wives Evelyn Coile Mynatt and Norma Foust Mynatt, as well as daughters Judith Ann Mynatt Pickle and Janice Lynn Mynatt Akers, and grandson Daniel Lynn Akers. He is survived by his brother Jerry (Phyllis) Mynatt, sister-in-law Joyce Mynatt, and brother-in-law Ronald (Suzie) Coile. He is survived by two children, Julia Irene Mynatt (Thomas, Jr.) Axley and Bill Ronald (Stacy) Mynatt, Jr., son-in-law Robert (Amy) Pickle, and stepdaughter Shaune (J.D.) Pugh His family has grown tremendously through the years. He was Papaw to grandchildren Patrick Noles, P. Douglas Akers, Jr., Jason Akers, Rev. Gregory (Tracee) Pickle, Gary (Katie) Pickle, Christian Eric (Brittany) Pickle, Amanda Axley (Andrew)Presnell, Sarah Ann Axley (Justin) Tarbox, Bill (Julie) Mynatt III, and Stephanie (Stephen) Jimenez. He was also Papaw to his great grandchildren Haley Ingle, Brayden Akers, Brett Akers, Jalen Akers, Blake Pickle, Halle Pickle, Autumn Pickle, Taylor Pickle, Kinzer Pickle, Cooper Mynatt Pickle, Adeline Presnell, Jamie Presnell, Henry Tarbox, Billy Mynatt IV, Caroline Mynatt, Miller Jimenez, Veera Jimenez, Lochlin Jimenez, Baby Boy Jimenez (December 2020), and Baby Girl Pickle (October 2020.) He is also survived by his special friend, Maxey Jo Phillips, with whom he spent many happy days together at their assisted living community in the past three years.
Friends may call at their convenience on Friday, July 24 from 12:00pm to 7:00pm with COVID precautions at Mynatt’s Funeral Home, Fountain City Chapel at 2829 Rennoc Road, Knoxville.
Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 24 at 7:00pm at the funeral home with Chaplain Dan Hix officiating. The family requests strict COVID precautions with masks and social distancing. Due to current health concerns, the family will not be present during call hours.
Burial will be a private family service at Edgewood Cemetery, Knoxville, on Saturday, July 25.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Knox County Association of Baptists Camp Ba Yo Ca, 2320 Happy Hollow Road, Sevierville, TN 37832, in memory of Rev. Billy R. Mynatt, Sr. Billy was an instrumental part of the construction and formation of Camp Ba Yo Ca in his early days as a pastor, as well as serving as camp pastor on several occasions.
