Barry Britton

Lt. Col Barry Britton Sr, of Powell, TN, passed away at home on Friday, December 16, 2016 surrounded by his family. Barry graduated the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1970. He then received a commission in the United States Air Force where he served his country for 22 years. Barry served as a Staff Development Engineering Manager, Astronautical Engineer, Scientific Manager, and Project Engineer. While serving in the Air Force, Barry went on to earn a Master of Science in Photographic Sciences and Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology, an MBA in Business at Western New England University, a Leadership and Military Science degrees at Air War College, Leadership and Military Science degrees at Air Command and Staff College, Squadron Officer School, Academic Instructor School, Joint Command and Communications Staff and Operations Course. Barry received multiple awards including Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 total awards), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award (2 total awards), National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award (5 total awards), and Air Force Training Ribbon. During his Air Force Career, Barry contributed to the development of Global Positioning System (GPS), Missile Defense and other satellite systems, and assisted in the development of space curriculum at Air War College. Barry retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1993 when he began work at Crown College of the Bible where he served for 20 years and received an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities. Barry served in multiple capacities including Dean of Men, Registrar, and Professor of multiple Math and Science courses. Barry is preceded by his parents, Jesse and Norma Britton as well as his sister, Sandra Blair, and brother, Dallas Britton. Barry is survived by brother, Anthony Britton and sister, Linda Cunningham, his wife, Midge Britton, his children, Lisa Kitchen, Sarah King, Mary Bohman, Rachel Swartz, Barry Britton Jr, David Britton, Daniel Britton, and Jessica Johnson as well as 12 grandchildren. Barry was an extremely dedicated and selfless husband, father, and grandfather. Barry received Jesus Christ as his Savior as a young adult and spent his life in service to God, his family, and his country. Barry affected many lives through his testimony and ministry. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 21 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the main auditorium at Temple Baptist Church at 1700 W Beaver Creek Dr, Powell, TN 37849. The visitation will be immediately followed by the Memorial Service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Barry’s life. Barry will be laid to rest on Thursday, December 22 at 10:30 AM at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery at 2200 E Governor John Sevier Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37920. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Student Scholarship Fund at The Crown College of the Bible.
