Barbara Jean Woods Cosey Smelser

BARBARA JEAN WOODS COSEY SMELSER
Barbara “Bobbie” Smelser, age 92, of Knoxville, TN passed away on August 17, 2023, after a 14-year battle with Alzheimer’s.  She was born May 29, 1931, to Kermit Mason Woods, Sr. and Willie Kate Turner Woods.  She was the oldest of seven children.  After Bobbie graduated from Central High School, she held various jobs including sales lady at Millers and Sears Department Stores, a commercial bank teller, and a hotel receptionist, but her highest calling was as a mother and grandmother.  In 1950, she married William Edward Cosey, and they had 4 children that they raised in the Presbyterian Church.  Bobbie was a Girl Scout leader in the Norwood area and served as President of the PTA.  She was an artist and avid gardener, who enjoyed square dancing, and summer fun on Norris Lake. She gave the best hugs and shared them generously!
Later in life, Bobbie married Dale Emerson Smelser and lovingly welcomed his 5 children and their families into her heart. Together, Bobbie and Dale enjoyed traveling, playing golf, winters in Texas with great friends, and especially time with family. 
Bobbie is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dale Smelser; her sisters Wilma Lambert, Becky Wolfenbarger, and Martha Woods; her brother Charlie Woods; and her great-great grandson Weston Cosey.  She is survived by her brother Kermit Woods, Jr; sister Debra Moyers; her children Bill (and Donna) Cosey, Bob (and Shelley) Cosey, Laura Cosey, Cathy (and John) Hulsey, Diane (and Jim) Bailes, Teresa (and Mick) Pulver, Lee Anne Roberts, Keith (and Barbara) Smelser, Ross (and Melissa) Smelser; 18 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, at best count, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 21st from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Mynatt Funeral Home Powell Chapel, 2000 Powell Drive in Powell, TN, with the service to follow at 6:00 pm.  Reverend Jim Bailes will be officiating.  Graveside services will be Tuesday, August 22nd at 1:00 pm at Greenwood Cemetery, 3500 Tazewell Pike in Knoxville, TN. Please arrive at 12:45 pm for the 1:00 pm graveside service.
