Anna M Tarwater (Nan), age 94, departed this life on Tuesday, July 14, 2020. She was born on April 3, 1926 in Minersville, PA to James and Florence Mullen.
On a three day leave from the phone company to Atlantic City with her best girlfriends, Nan caught the eye of an army soldier named Clyde on the boardwalk. They exchanged letters for a time and upon his return from Europe, they married and moved to Tennessee. A year later, in 1947, James was born. Nan looked forward to traveling to PA with James to visit her mom, dad, grandpap and cherished cousins. In 1969, she began her career at Cole’s Drug, retiring after 44 years at the age of 87 under the CVS brand. Nan and her one and only grandson, Jimmy worked together at CVS a few years prior to her retirement. Nan enjoyed traveling, which included a trip to Hawaii and Europe, with her best friend Lou, retracing Clyde’s journeys in WWII. She always enjoyed her annual trip to Daytona Beach, Florida to catch up with friends old and new. In later years, her granddaughter, Stacy, became her travel companion. Together they traveled to Cancun Mexico and cruised to Alaska.
Nan’s life was truly as full and colorful as the stories she told thru the years.
Nan was preceded in death by her parents, James and Florence Mullen. Her husband Clyde Tarwater. Her son, James F Tarwater. Left to cherish memories of Nan are granddaughter, Stacy (Jeff) Lane; grandson, Jimmy (Jessica) Tarwater; grandchildren, Hunter, Kailey and Josh. Extended family and special friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Alexander Guest House and UT Hospice for their care.
Our grandmother was a giving person. This was reflected in her time volunteering at the VA hospital in Johnson City and her time and efforts spent with the DAV Auxiliary and LAMOPH in Knoxville. Please keep her spirit alive by volunteering or donating to the charity of your choice.
